Bittersweet Chocolate | Smoky | Full Bodied

The coffee equivalent of a big, full-bodied Cabernet, Empire is as bold as the famous Corsican empire-builder that inspired the label. While this coffee is what is known in North America as a French roast, it's much darker than a traditional French coffee. The coffee is roasted to the point that the beans reach a deep, dark brown color and aromatic oils coat the surface of the beans. Roasting beyond the second crack to develop this color brings out bittersweet, smoky notes in the beans and mutes the brighter, winy notes. All the coffees used in our Empire blend were selected to contribute to its full body and dark cocoa flavors. These beans are hand-picked from high-altitude Rainforest Alliance Certified farms in Latin America. To highlight the robust character of Empire, we suggest using a French Press as the ideal brew method, though it works well in an auto-drip brewer for larger groups.

“Reunion opened its first Toronto cafe on Roncy in 2015. But they’ve quietly been brewing and building relationships with farmers since 1995, and it shows in the deep lineup of single-origin beans in stock on a regular basis. They’ve been buying these Las Hermosas beans for 15 years from a farm co-operative in southern Colombia. It’s roasted to medium and meant to exemplify the platonic ideal of what a cup of Colombian coffee should taste like: not too acidic and a little sweet, with some hints of milk chocolate.”

“There are an abundance of Canadian coffee roasters making waves in the specialty coffee world, and most ship countrywide (some with subscriptions, so you'll never run out). Across Canada, notable coffee roasters like Reunion, along with many others now, make delicious, specialty coffee accessible daily for their in-store customers and the at-home brewer.”
